"The lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again. Untouched by the impurity, lotus symbolizes the purity of heart and mind. The lotus flower represents long life, health, honor and good luck." Deviant Art
Several coats of enamel (powdered glass) are applied and fired after each application in a kiln at 1500° in order to get this effect. After grinding, sanding and polishing they are ready for the Niobium ear wires, which are hypoallergenic for those with metal sensitivities. They have either sterling silver beads, pure copper beads or 14K gold filled and brass beads as appropriate for the color of the piece.
Since it is difficult to predict precisely what will happen in the kiln, each pair…in fact each earring is unique so cannot be reproduced exactly.
As with all my jewelry, they will arrive gift boxed appropriate for giving, complete with a gift tag (blank on the back) for you to write your personal message on. I am also happy to handwrite a note and send directly to your recipient.
Each piece is a reflection of my passion for metalworking as I form, solder, file, saw, fuse, hammer, and polish every piece of jewelry by hand in my Vermont studio.
Niobium is a chemical element (symbol Nb). It is a soft, grey metal that is naturally found in the minerals pyrochlore and columbite. Niobium is naturally hypoallergenic and commonly used in a number of medical devices including prosthetics and implants, such as pacemakers. Often used in jewelry making because of its hypoallergenic properties, this metal is a safe choice for anyone with metal allergies.
