Not All Sourdough Is Equal

For a long time, David was convinced he didn’t like sourdough bread.

And honestly, he had given it a fair try. He’d bought several different brands, tried loaves from the grocery store, and even sampled a few from farmers markets. Each time, the verdict was the same: Nope. Not for me.

So I stopped trying to convince him.

Then we met Erika from Kidding Around Farm.

And wouldn’t you know it? David is now officially a sourdough convert.

It turns out, not all sourdough bread is created equal. The difference between a rushed, mass-produced loaf and one made with time, care, and a well-loved starter is huge. Real sourdough has character. It has flavor without being harsh. It has texture without being tough. It feels like actual food, not just something shaped like bread.

And when it’s made right, sourdough can be so much better than store-bought bread of just about any kind.

That’s the part that makes me happiest. I love when someone thinks they don’t like something, only to discover they just hadn’t had the right version yet. Whether it’s bread, vegetables, handmade jewelry, or anything else made by hand, the person behind it matters.

There’s a big difference between something made quickly and something made with skill, patience, and care.

Erika’s sourdough changed David’s mind, which is no small thing. Around here, that counts as a pretty big endorsement.

So now, yes, we are a sourdough household.

And apparently, all it took was the right loaf.
